Nihongo So-matome N2 Grammar

N2GrammarNihongo So-matome seriesIn-depth analysis · 2026-08-26

Verdict

The eight-week calendar that actually gets finished — by design, not depth.

So-matome's whole thesis is printed on the schedule: eight weeks, seven days each, two pages a day, three or four expressions per day with translations directly under the examples — and every seventh day a review, a keigo touch-up and an exam-format test. The 2022 revised edition quietly fixed the old gaps, adding two mock tests, explained answers in a 36-page booklet and free audio, while most English reviews still describe the 2010 book. What it deliberately won't do is teach the differences between look-alike patterns — the publisher states outright that the exam doesn't test them. That makes it a superb finishing tool and a risky sole source.

Best for

  • Six-to-eight-week runways — the printed schedule is the product, and learners document passing on exactly this plan
  • Learners who want English (or Chinese/Korean) support on the page, not in a separate book
  • Daily-drip studiers — ten minutes every morning over months is its natural rhythm

Not ideal for

  • Anyone who needs look-alike patterns distinguished — that is a stated non-goal; pair it with a reference or the rival
  • Learners using one grammar book for the whole climb — solo-source fails are documented
  • Anyone expecting the five N2 volumes' calendars to interlock day by day — they don't

What's inside 目次

  1. 01第1週〜第8週Weeks 1–8 · the daily calendar
    • Days 1–6 teach three or four expressions grouped by similar form; day 7 reviews the week with a keigo section and a JLPT-format test
  2. 02模擬試験 第1回・第2回Two mock tests (added in the 2022 revision)
  3. 03別冊36-page booklet · translations and explained answers

Strengths & weaknesses 長所と短所

  • It gets finished — the daily two-page format is the most completion-friendly design in JLPT prep, and short-runway passes on this exact plan are well documented.
  • The 2022 revision fixed the classic complaints — mock tests, explained answers and audio — while the English review landscape still describes the 2010 edition.
  • Translations sit under every example, so you never stall on an explanation the way all-Japanese rivals allow.
  • By explicit design it does not differentiate similar patterns — fine for recognition on exam day, a real gap for production and for "why is this wrong" moments.
  • Documented as too light to be a sole grammar source — the standard pairing is So-matome for exposure, then a deeper book or reference for the distinctions.
  • The five N2 volumes' weekly calendars don't align with each other, so running the full series in parallel takes your own scheduling.
